Reloading question

Postby nalioth » Tue Feb 09, 2010 1:05 am

Howdy y'all

Is this reloading setup any good?

It's a Lee Classic set, and supposedly is all you need to reload one caliber.

TIA

Reloading question

If you are loading what? Depending on the caliber, you can need a lot of force to do the loading. This will load it but offers little in the way of leverage so for some calibers it can be a real bear to use. There are a lot of calibers though that it does work well with though. I have used this set up at the range at times to work up specific loads for a specific sort of usage.

It is a very slow way of doing things, we normally look at those as being somewhat laborious and as a last ditch way of reloading. Get yourself a press , even a basic one like an RCBS partner or similar. It wil be much easier and faster.

I use a Lee Turret and have for some time (more than 30 years). I have loaded thousands of rounds on it and find it is well worth the money.

Even the basic, single stage press like Ausdigr is talking about will serve you far better than something like that if you plan on using it a lot. I would never use one of the ones I have for more than an at the range working uop a load sort of thing as they really are a lot of work and if you are not careful, they make it easy to make mistakes. You can sure load a lot of powderless rounds with one of those if you are not careful and while I know you are kidding, don't use a hammer...

Yep, a Lee turret progressive loader is the way to go. I've been re-loading for 10 years now with it and countless of thousands of rounds. With that loader it's 1 at a time!

I would not use the Lee Loader for any auto loading pistol or rifle. The Lee Loader only resizes the case mouth. For a bolt action rifle they work ok until neck tension dissapears. And even then the cartridge can only be fired in the weapon it was originally fired in since the case isn't full length resized. In an auto loader you run in to the possibility of not fully chambering the round and having it fire out of battery or slam fire. Plus the neck tension degrades each time you reload a case and set back can occur from recoil or chambering.

I've used them alot when I was a beginner and they produce very accurate fire formed ammo.

he is using it for a revolver so this will not come into play....

I am still for him getting even a single stage rather than a hand held caliber specific unit.
If you get yourself a press, all it takes is dies to make different calibers after this and Lee makes a good, inexpensive press.
I have used Lee products my whole reloading life because they are simply more for the money and built to last forever.

The turret press is really an easy press to use and can take you from low volume at first to higher later as you learn more.

I load 45acp and 9mm all the time! If the press is setup correctly it resizes the whole case! Now bottlenecked cases may be different.

Spareparts is referring to the original item, the Lee Loader, not the turret press.
